Japanese Head Spa in Madagascar: what to expect
A Japanese scalp treatment that reached Antananarivo recently. What happens during the session, what it costs, and what it is not.
The Head Spa has established itself in Antananarivo over the past few years, and it is one of the few treatments where Malagasy prices remain far below European ones. Here is what you need to decide whether it interests you — and what a session actually looks like.
What it is
The Head Spa — ヘッドスパ — originated in Japanese salons. It is a long treatment devoted to the scalp rather than to hair length: deep cleansing, cranial massage, warm-water rinsing, and treatment products.
What separates it from an ordinary shampoo is time and attention. Where a salon wash takes five minutes, a Head Spa session occupies sixty to ninety, a good half of which is massage.
It is a relaxation and maintenance treatment. It is not medical care: if you have a scalp condition, unusual hair loss or persistent irritation, see a doctor rather than a salon.
How a session runs
The sequence varies between venues, but the outline is stable:
- A scalp examination. Some salons use a magnifying camera and show you the image on a screen. It is striking, and it mainly serves to choose the products.
- A first cleanse, to remove styling product residue.
- The massage, usually the heart of the session: neck, temples, crown, sometimes the shoulders. This is where the relaxation happens.
- An extended warm-water rinse, often lying down with your head in a dedicated basin.
- A treatment applied according to your scalp type, then drying and light styling.
You leave with clean, styled hair. Even so, avoid scheduling an important meeting straight afterwards: people come out of a Head Spa relaxed, sometimes a little drowsy.

Add travel time. Antananarivo traffic is a real factor: allow generous margins, and let the salon know if you are running late.

For comparison, the same treatment commonly costs €80 to €150 at a specialist salon in Europe, and more in Japan. It is one of the sector’s most favourable gaps — alongside nail work.
These prices are for a mid-range venue with dedicated equipment. A neighbourhood salon will offer a scalp treatment for less, but not the same treatment.
Who it suits
- You work at a screen and carry tension in your neck: this is the most common reason people book.
- Your scalp is oily or irritated by heat and urban pollution.
- You want an hour of genuine relaxation without undressing — this is often what decides people against a conventional massage.
Two honest caveats. If your hair is very long, allow extra time for drying. And if you have recently had your hair coloured, say so: some treatments can fade it.
Booking
Most Antananarivo salons take appointments by WhatsApp or Messenger. A Head Spa occupies one technician for one to two hours: it is very much a treatment to book rather than to walk in for.
State the duration you want when you book, and ask whether the price includes styling — formats vary.
